“Workers Deserve Action, Not Just Praise — NATE Ogun State Chairman Charges Employers
As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark Workers’ Day, the Chairman of the Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering (NATE), Ogun State Branch, Engr. Tech. Ogunwemimo Kolawole Amos, has called on government and private organizations to move beyond words and take meaningful action in appreciating workers, particularly those in the engineering sector.
In a Workers’ Day message made available to journalists, the NATE chairman emphasized the need to recognize the effort, dedication, and resilience of workers across all sectors of the economy. He noted that the celebration should not only be symbolic but also serve as a moment for reflection and renewed commitment by both employers and employees towards building a more functional and inclusive society.
Highlighting the critical role of engineering professionals, Ogunwemimo described technologists, technicians, and engineers as key drivers of national development. According to him, their contributions span vital sectors such as construction, manufacturing, energy, telecommunications, and technology, forming the backbone of systems that sustain everyday life.
“The comfort, safety, and progress we enjoy as a society are largely made possible through the skill, creativity, and dedication of engineering personnel,” he stated.
Addressing employers, the NATE chairman urged organizations to demonstrate genuine appreciation for their workforce through practical measures rather than mere statements. He stressed that workers’ welfare should be embedded in workplace policies and culture.
He outlined several areas requiring attention, including fair and competitive remuneration that reflects the demands of engineering roles, continuous staff development through training and certifications, and the provision of safe and well-equipped working environments. He also called for recognition and reward of excellence, as well as the creation of clear career growth opportunities for deserving employees.
Ogunwemimo noted that when workers feel valued, they are more motivated and committed, leading to improved productivity, reduced system failures, and stronger organizational performance.
Speaking directly to workers, he encouraged them to remain committed to professionalism, integrity, and excellence in their duties. He advised engineering personnel to prioritize quality and safety, continuously upgrade their skills, maintain discipline and teamwork, and embrace innovation in solving problems.
“Workers must take pride in their roles, knowing that their contributions have a direct impact on industries, communities, and the future of the nation,” he added.
He further stressed that Workers’ Day should go beyond an annual celebration and instead inspire a lasting culture of mutual respect and shared responsibility between employers and employees.
The NATE chairman concluded by appreciating workers for their dedication and urging all stakeholders to work together towards building stronger institutions and a more prosperous society.
